6 Common Types of Aggressive Dog Behavior
At the end of this article, I’ll refer you to an effective, easy-to-follow, inexpensive dog training program created specifically for dog aggression. But first, let’s discuss six common types of dog aggression. The first step to getting your dog’s aggressive behavior solved is to understand why it’s happening.
1. Fear Aggression. When a scared dog feels trapped, they may show aggressive behavior or even fight to protect themselves. It’s likely the dog is not mean or nasty. They’re often reacting aggressively out of fear.
2. Resource Guarding. Dogs will sometimes behave aggressively when they’re trying to protect what’s theirs. This can be their food, toys, bones, or even people. Dog Food aggression is quite common.
3. Leash Aggression. If your dog barks at other dogs during walks, pulls toward other dogs, or worse, lunges at other dogs, they may be leash aggressive. Leash aggression is fairly common.
4. Pain Aggression. Even the most gentle dog can become aggressive if they’re in pain. If a dog is injured or ill, they may even bite someone with little or no warning. They may behave very aggressively, even if you’re trying to help them. They’re just trying to prevent further pain.
An important side note here: Dogs who are forced to wear choke collars or worse, electric dog shock collars, can become aggressive. Again…due to PAIN. I’ll be providing you with information about why dog shock collars are dangerous, ineffective and unnecessary.
5. Aggression toward other dogs. Some of the reasons dogs become aggressive toward other dogs are dominance, fear, stress, or lack of training. If your dog shows aggression toward other dogs, it can ruin your ability to enjoy walks with your dog, or worse, whether you can walk your dog at all.
6. Aggression toward people. There are a lot of reasons why a dogs behave aggressively toward people. This one isn’t just bothersome or annoying; it can be downright dangerous. If your dog tends to be aggressive toward people, especially children, it’s crucial that you get it resolved quickly. And if your dog is aggressive toward YOU, you need to get help immediately!
